Content Auditing & Fact-Checking

Independent verification of published content, source auditing, and accuracy assessment for organizations and publishers. We help you ensure that what you publish is correct, fair, and defensible.

In an era of rapid content production, factual accuracy is both a competitive advantage and a reputational safeguard. Our content auditing and fact-checking service provides independent, systematic verification of your published or draft content. We examine claims, verify sources, check data, and flag potential inaccuracies or misleading statements before they become liabilities.

This service is led by Priya Chakrabarti, our Research Director, who applies a rigorous verification methodology to every audit. Whether you are reviewing a single article before publication or conducting a comprehensive audit of your entire content library, we deliver clear, actionable findings that help you maintain trust with your audience.

Our Process

1

Scope Definition

We agree on the content to be audited, the depth of verification required, the standards to be applied, and the deliverable format. For hourly audits, you specify priority areas.

2

Source & Claim Verification

We examine each factual claim, statistic, quote, and attribution in the content. We trace sources to their origin, verify data against primary records, and flag unsupported or ambiguous statements.

3

Analysis & Annotation

We annotate the content with our findings - confirmed facts, corrections needed, items requiring further sourcing, and recommendations for stronger attribution or clearer language.

4

Report & Recommendations

We deliver a formal audit report with a summary of findings, severity ratings for each issue, and specific recommendations for correction. 2 rounds of revisions to the report are included.

Who This Service Is For

Content auditing is valuable for publishers, media organizations, corporate communications teams, nonprofits, government agencies, academic institutions, and any organization that publishes factual content. It is particularly important before high-stakes publications such as annual reports, white papers, investigative features, regulatory filings, and marketing materials that make factual claims. Organizations that have experienced factual errors or public corrections in the past often engage us for ongoing audit support.

How a Session Works

Hourly audits are booked for focused review of specific content pieces - an article, a press release, a report section. You send us the content and identify any priority areas. A standard report covers a larger body of content (such as a website section, a publication issue, or a series of articles) and includes a written audit report. A comprehensive audit reviews your entire content operation, including processes, source management, and editorial standards, and results in a detailed report with systemic recommendations.

What to Prepare

Before your audit engagement, please gather the following:

  • The content to be audited, in editable format (DOCX preferred) or via URL
  • Source files, references, and data sets used in the content
  • Any internal style guides or accuracy standards you follow
  • Information about your editorial review process
  • Specific concerns or areas of focus, if any

For information about your rights in media coverage and accuracy standards, read our guide: Your Rights in Media Coverage.

Deliverables & Formats

Hourly audits result in annotated content with inline comments. Standard and comprehensive audits include a formal written report in PDF and DOCX format, containing: executive summary, methodology description, itemized findings with severity ratings (critical, important, minor), specific correction recommendations, and a summary of source quality. Annotated content with tracked changes is provided alongside the report.

Timelines

Hourly audits can typically be scheduled within 1 week. Standard reports take 1-2 weeks depending on content volume. Comprehensive audits require 2-4 weeks. Urgent pre-publication fact-checking can be arranged with shorter turnaround - contact us to discuss your deadline.

Revisions & Follow-Up

2 rounds of revisions to the audit report are included. After the audit, we are available for follow-up questions and can review your corrections to confirm they address the identified issues. Ongoing audit arrangements (monthly or quarterly) are available for organizations with regular content production needs.

What Is Not Included

Content auditing does not include rewriting or editing content on your behalf (see Editorial Consulting), legal review for defamation or regulatory compliance, fact-checking of opinion or editorial commentary (we verify facts within opinion pieces, not the opinions themselves), translation verification (though we can audit French-language content with our bilingual team), or SEO analysis.

Common Questions About Content Auditing

Can you audit content that has already been published?

Yes. Post-publication audits are common and valuable. We can review published articles, reports, web pages, or marketing materials and provide a report identifying any factual issues. This is useful for organizations that want to strengthen their existing content or address accuracy concerns.

How do you rate the severity of findings?

We use a three-level rating system: critical (factual errors that could cause significant harm or legal risk), important (inaccuracies or unsupported claims that undermine credibility), and minor (formatting inconsistencies, imprecise language, or weak attributions). Each finding includes a specific correction recommendation.

Do you check images and multimedia content?

We verify factual claims made in captions, infographics, data visualizations, and accompanying text. We check that images are accurately captioned and properly attributed. We do not conduct forensic image analysis for manipulation, though we can recommend specialists who provide that service.

Can I set up a recurring audit arrangement?

Yes. Many publishers and communications teams engage us for monthly or quarterly content audits. Recurring arrangements are priced on a retainer basis and can be customized to your content volume and priorities. Contact us to discuss a recurring audit plan.
